Weather can have a significant impact on autoimmune diseases and chronic conditions, influencing symptoms and overall disease management. Flares are a common response to any large fluctuations in temperature or extreme weather conditions. It is not only the disease itself, but side effects of your medications can also cause issues. As an example, the following is how a few of my conditions are impacted by the weather. Temperature fluctuations can also trigger flares, making symptom management more challenging.

Sjogren’s syndrome, characterized by dryness in the eyes and mouth, humidity levels play a crucial role. High humidity can exacerbate these symptoms, leading to increased discomfort and potential complications like eye infections. Conversely, low humidity environments can cause further dryness, necessitating the need for frequent use of artificial tears and hydration measures. Both high temperatures and low temperatures can cause increased joint pain and stiffness.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease causing joint inflammation, stiffness, and pain, is also heavily influenced by weather conditions. Cold and damp weather is often reported to worsen joint pain and stiffness in RA patients. This phenomenon is partly due to changes in barometric pressure, which can affect the pressure within the joints, leading to increased pain. Many individuals with RA find that their symptoms improve in warmer climates, where the pressure is more stable and temperatures are consistently higher. However, extreme heat can also cause dehydration and increase fatigue, complicating symptom management.

Raynaud’s phenomenon, which is common in several autoimmune conditions, including systemic sclerosis and lupus, involves a vascular response to cold temperatures or stress. Exposure to cold can lead to severe vasoconstriction, causing the fingers and toes to turn white or blue and become numb or painful. This reaction can be particularly problematic during winter months or in cold climates, requiring affected individuals to take extra precautions such as wearing insulated gloves and warm clothing to maintain body heat and prevent episodes. A change in temperature in either direction can cause an attack of Raynaud’s so although Raynaud’s is worse in winterattacks can happen in summer as well.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder that affects skin, joints, and blood vessel walls, can also be influenced by weather. Individuals with EDS often experience joint pain and instability, which can be exacerbated by cold weather, leading to increased joint stiffness, and discomfort. Additionally, changes in weather can affect barometric pressure, potentially worsening pain symptoms. People with EDS might also experience heightened fatigue during periods of extreme weather, whether it’s very hot or very cold, impacting their overall quality of life and ability to perform daily activities.

Dysautonomia, a disorder of the autonomic nervous system that affects bodily functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature regulation, is highly sensitive to weather changes. Heat intolerance is a common symptom in many forms of dysautonomia, such as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). In hot weather, individuals with dysautonomia may experience exacerbated symptoms including dizziness, fatigue, and syncope (fainting). This is because heat can cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to lower blood pressure and increased heart rate as the body struggles to cool down, overwhelming an already compromised autonomic system.

Cold weather can also pose challenges for those with dysautonomia. The body’s ability to regulate temperature is often impaired, making it difficult for individuals to stay warm. This can lead to symptoms such as cold extremities, numbness, and even Raynaud’s phenomenon, where blood flow to fingers and toes is reduced, causing them to turn white or blue and become painful. Moreover, rapid changes in barometric pressure, often associated with changing weather patterns, can trigger migraines and further exacerbate symptoms such as brain fog and headaches in dysautonomia patients. These weather-induced fluctuations require careful management strategies, including staying hydrated, wearing appropriate clothing, and avoiding extreme temperatures to maintain stability and improve quality of life.
